I was really happy to find this beer, not only because it sells out so quickly but also because it’s a great buy. Oh hey, bargains! From the label alone, I knew I'd be a fan. It pours a dark brown/black with a two fingers of light brown foam. Its aroma is inviting with hints of whisky and coffee, just like an old friend welcoming me home. The first taste brings a bit of coffee, chocolate, sour cherry, vanilla and toffee on the front end with a strong bitter coffee flavor on the finish. This beer is made with coffee from Petaluma Coffee & Tea, then aged in Rye Whiskey barrels from High West Distillery.
You absolutely can taste the whiskey and get a bit of heat, but it’s not overwhelming at all considering its abv of 12.2%. The oak and coffee help to balance out the sweetness of the vanilla and toffee so this is personally a plus (I'm not a huge fan of the sweeter stouts). Furthermore, this imperial also has low carbonation and a medium to full body. Drink two of these and you'll be feeling great, plus at $13 for a six pack it's very affordable (as far as craft beer goes). I’m certainly looking forward to my next opportunity to enjoy this one.
