Wow, I wasn’t sure what to expect when opening this bottle. I expected some sweetness, fruit and bourbon, but it was much more unique than I anticipated. It pours black with a bit of dark tan head. At 10.5% and bourbon barrel aged the nose was different than typical bba. I didn’t get any bourbon or alcohol in the aroma, but mostly milk chocolate, blueberry, and a little vanilla. The first sip was blueberry, lots of cream and a little sour tinge as the fruit hit the back of my mouth. It was extremely smooth and with no heat or bourbon. Normally, I’d be disappointed in this aspect, but Founder’s balanced this stout so well I didn’t have a chance to miss it. The blueberry provides some variation from many other imperial stouts while the sweetness is familiar, it’s not overdone and there was much more cream than I anticipated. The flavors are rounded out with some vanilla and chocolate. I’d buy this beer again and again. As someone who typically isn’t a huge fan of stout unless they’re barrel aged I was surprised to be such a big fan of a bba that doesn’t have any bourbon, but damn I can’t deny Founders knows what they are doing.
