Highland Cold Mountain Winter Ale

January 10, 2017

We saved our bottle of Cold Mountain until we were stuck inside because of snow (NC pretty much shuts down at the mention of snow in the forecast). I will not lie, I wasn’t expecting much. I knew it was a popular beer, but I don’t necessarily always enjoy the hyped up beers. At 5.9% this was also a lower abv than either one of us typically sip on. Winter ale’s don’t tend to be our thing either, but it was overall a well done beer. If it were less pricey I would buy whenever I had the chance.

It poured a dark amber with a large amount of beige foam.  There is quite a bit of spices in this including caramel, hazelnut, vanilla, cinnamon and fruit notes as well. It’s lightly hopped with cascade and mount hood hops and quite a bit of malt flavors. Overall it’s a nice winter warmer with a medium body and carbonation and a lower abv so it’s easy to drink a couple of pints.
