Ah Friday the 13th, one of my favorite pseudo-Holidays. Maybe it’s because I am horror obsessed or maybe it’s because I know 13 was originally considered lucky. Nevertheless winter is a tough time for us drinkers of the world. After New Years Eve we are deprived of any holidays until Mardi Gras. Since we are fans of Friday the 13th we decided to celebrate with New Belgium’s recent release of new beers: Voodoo Ranger 8 Hop Pale Ale, IPA, and Imperial IPA.
8 Hop Pale Ale
You know we like our hops, so we were excited to try out this pale. It pours a golden yellow with some obvious carbonation. Its nose is a lot of pine and citrus. At 5.5% it’s very drinkable and has some complexity from the array of hops, citrus and tropical fruit flavors. It is light to medium bodied with stinging carbonation.
The IPA pours a bit darker than the pale, but is a similar color with a quick to disappear head. It doesn’t boast the same amount of carbonation as the pale either. It does pack a lot more fruit flavor, mostly mango, papaya, and some flavor from the mosaic and amarillo hops. It’s very refreshing and easy to drink for a 7% as the hops and bitterness are balanced by the fruit. I could definitely see myself enjoying this beachside. In fact I really wish I could do that right now.
The Imperial IPA pours a light amber color and the foam lingers much longer than the two previous beers in the series. This leads to a creamy mouthfeel. The abv of 8% is well hidden with some notes of citrus and pine though it’s not as complex as I wish it were.
Even if you aren’t celebrating Friday the 13th with Voodoo beers like we are, you can’t go wrong with this series. They all offer some complexity with well balanced citrus and hops. No matter what you’re drinking tonight, we hope you are getting weird.
