Raleigh Brewing Raleighwood Rum Barrel Aged Old Ale
February 16, 2017
Raleigh Brewing's Raleighwood series releases a different barrel aged old ale each year. As a fan of anything barrel aged, I was excited to try out their 2016 version Rum Barrel-aged. I've had a few rum barrel aged beers, but bourbon is the front runner for most barrel-aged so it was nice to have something a bit more unique. The nose boasted chocolate, banana and caramel. It was medium brown in color with a finger of light tan foam that lingered a bit. After 9 months in rum barrels you can definitely taste a bit of the rum spices and there is a little bit of heat. At 9.7% one can expect that though. It has light to medium carbonation, but is fairly smooth. The sweet nose flavors are present in the palate as well as raisin and plum.
